Burnout among emergency medicine physician assistants is at an all-time high. In fact, a 2018 AAPA research study shows that PAs in emergency medicine have the highest rates of burnout among all PAs.
Across all measures of burnout, PAs in emergency medicine reported the highest rates (34.5% of all PAs, ranging from 20.2% to 34.5%), including exhaustion at work (50.8%) and interpersonal disengagement (21.5%).
But, as discouraging of a picture that these stats paint, it should be noted that the study also shows that, despite this high rate of burnout, PAs in emergency medicine have the highest rates of professional fulfillment. Seventy-two percent (72%) of emergency medicine PAs reported that they feel fulfilled by the work they perform.
To help EMPAs address burnout and get on the road to wellness, SEMPA has identified a number of resources to recognize and manage burnout and develop strategies aimed at overall wellness.
